Good films play a major role in our lives. We learn from them, reflect and get inspired by actors’ performance and by carefully crafted by the production team visuals. It is not surprising then, that there are quite a few film related awards that take stage in London. From smaller indie film awards to BAFTAs, every function attracts film industry professionals and cinephiles in great numbers.
The Golden Unicorn Awards is one of the latest additions to the list of Film Awards and it’s probably one of the glitziest yet. Held at the magnificent Langham hotel in central London, the Awards ceremony honours films about Russia – of both Russian and International productions.
The second Golden Unicorn Awards was attended by Bond girl actor Olga Kyrylenko (James Bond, Oblivion, Hitman), Placebo bassist Stefan Olsdal, Film Directors Aleksandr Uchitel and Andrey Zvyagintsev (Leviathan, Loveless), German actor Lars Eidinger (Matilda, Personal Shopper), Adrian McLoughlin (Death of Stalin), celebrity photographer Joe Alvarez, model Tamara Orlova-Alvarez and Grammy-winning singer Polina among others.
The founder of the awards Filip Perkon says his mission is to build bridges between Russian and Western cultures by means of cinema. The same message was voiced during the award acceptance speeches. Unlike many Western award ceremonies, no political or social engineering agendas of winners were voiced during the ceremony. All winners spoke about the passion that united them – cinematography and creativity.
Bond girl Olga Kurylenko, accompanied by her new partner actor Ben Cura (The Royals, Gun Shy) and her mother Marina Alyabusheva, was in good spirits as she watched the award ceremony next to the Russian Film Director Andrey Zvyagintsev. The director - who won Special Jury Prize in Cannes for his new film Loveless - was honoured at the Golden Unicorn Awards with two gongs: Best Screenplay and Best Film. The third ‘Loveless’ award went to Maryana Spivak for her performance in the award-winning film.
Among other winners were Aleksander Yatsenko for his performance in film Arrhythmia and film director Aleksandr Uchitel – lifetime achievement awards presented by jewellery company Geraldo.
Ikon London Magazine and Ikon London Syndication were media partners of the Russian Film Week and Golden Unicorn Awards.
