In June last year, excitement reigned when Lotus announced that, for the first time, it was going to build a motorbike. And here it is – the Lotus C-01. It did have some help, though – it was developed by auto racing team Kodewa, car designer Daniel Simon, and motorsport group Holzer. It is, Lotus claims, a 'hyper bike'. I'm not arguing. It looks spectacular.
A few technical details of this most super of superbikes, of which only 100 will be built (and for which no price has been announced): its sleek chassis is made from steel, titanium and carbon fibre, while its 1200cc V-Twin engine offers a mighty 200hp. You can even customise the livery, too. What does surprise me, for a motorcycle of this calibre, is the relative 'low tech' twin shock rear suspension. Twin shocks? On a bike like this? So 1980's even if they are gas ones. No mono-shock? No single sided swing arm at the rear? Oh well, The front does see the modern standard 'upside down' front forks. I would've also preferred to have seen it belt driven instead of the messy and cumbersome -but cheap old tech- chain drive. The wheel base looks a little long, which is always good for high speed stability, but makes it hard work around town. Soon we'll find out what the ride and handling is like, and then we'll know for sure how the design fares. On looks alone its truly amazing.
