If you like your theatre bold, funny, and a little uncomfortable, Caridad Gómez’s one-woman show #FATKARY: The Corrido of a Tragic Ex-Fat Woman is one for the diary. Part cabaret, part confession, it lands at The Playground Theatre on 14–15 November as part of the multilingual Voila! Theatre Festival. Here’s why it deserves a spot on your November watchlist.

1. It’s theatre with bite – and humour.
Gómez turns body politics into a border ballad — literally. The show is a “corrido”, a Mexican storytelling tradition that mixes satire, music, and survival. Expect sharp humour and audience interaction that make difficult subjects (body image, shame, belonging) go down like a good shot of mezcal.

2. It redefines what a ‘body story’ can be.
This isn’t another self-help monologue. Gómez tackles identity and physicality with irreverence and rage, using food, rap, and dance to explore what it means to live in a body that doesn’t fit the mould — on stage or off it.

3. From the Mexican borderlands to London’s fringe.
After performances in Texas, Mexico City, and Baja California (where Gómez won Best Actress at the XLI Mtro. Rafael Solana Theatre Contest), #FATKARY now lands in London for the first time. This is border theatre — geographically, culturally, and emotionally.

4. It’s part of London’s most eclectic theatre festival.
Voila! Theatre Festival is known for bringing multilingual, border-crossing work to London stages. This year’s edition spans 8 venues, 70 languages, and 470 artists.

5. It’s only here for two nights.
With performances on 14 and 15 November at The Playground Theatre, this is a short run that will vanish as fast as the snacks Gómez brings on stage. Catch it while you can.
