Miyako Yoshida returns with Giselle, marking a milestone for Japanese ballet in London.
In a groundbreaking moment for ballet and cultural exchange, the National Ballet of Japan will perform on the Royal Opera House’s main stage for the first time this July. The company, led by renowned former Royal Ballet Principal and Artistic Director Miyako Yoshida, will present its celebrated production of Giselle from 24–27 July 2025, marking the European debut of Japan’s state-funded ballet company.
This event is not just a homecoming for Yoshida, who danced her way into history as the first Japanese Principal at The Royal Ballet, but also a cultural landmark—the first appearance of an Asian dance company at Covent Garden in over 15 years. The production, which blends traditional romantic ballet with Japanese refinement and modern staging, features choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot with additional work by Alastair Marriott. The set, designed by British artist Dick Bird, takes inspiration from Lithuania’s haunting Hill of Crosses, creating a visually arresting backdrop for this timeless tale of love and redemption.
Yoshida reflects, “Bringing the National Ballet of Japan to London, a city that shaped my career and inspired countless Japanese dancers, is an honor. Our Giselle offers a lyrical yet powerful interpretation that I hope resonates with audiences here.”
The Royal Ballet’s Kevin O’Hare lauds the company’s visit as a celebration of Yoshida’s extraordinary legacy: “Her career bridged two cultures, and this debut highlights the deep artistic bond between Japan and the UK.”
