Rufus Wainwright’s Dream Requiem blends haunting choral beauty and narration by Meryl Streep in a groundbreaking premiere.
Mark your calendars: on 17 January 2025, Warner Classics will release the world premiere recording of Rufus Wainwright’s Dream Requiem. This monumental work, described by Wainwright as a requiem for human connection, loss, and hope, features narration by Meryl Streep and soprano solos by Anna Prohaska. The live recording from its Paris premiere will be available on digital, CD, and vinyl formats.
The first single, Sequentia V: Confutatis, is out today, offering a glimpse into the sweeping emotional scope of the requiem, which merges the timeless Latin Mass for the Dead with Lord Byron’s apocalyptic poem Darkness. Together, these texts create a haunting meditation on environmental collapse and human fragility, themes inspired by Wainwright’s experiences during the pandemic.
Tragedy and Beauty

At its core, Dream Requiem is a reflection on loss, both personal and collective. Wainwright channels the grandeur of Verdi and Mozart while exploring new musical terrains, balancing massive choral arrangements with delicate soprano solos to underscore life’s fragility. Byron’s text, narrated by Streep, is set against dark orchestral arrangements that vividly conjure the brutal imagery of ecological disaster. In contrast, the Latin Requiem passages soar with hope and resilience, offering moments of beauty amidst the darkness.
The work is deeply personal for Wainwright, dedicated to both Giuseppe Verdi and his beloved late dog Puccini, who was tragically killed during the pandemic. It’s a testament to the transformative power of music, inspired by his first encounter with Verdi’s Requiem as a teenager—a moment that set him on his artistic path.
