A country house, a body, a smoking revolver and a room full of suspicious guests. This Halloween week, Hercule Poirot is on the case as Agatha Christie’s The Hollow arrives at Richmond Theatre for five nights only.
Halloween week calls for a little mystery, and Richmond Theatre has just the thing: Agatha Christie’s The Hollow, complete with a country-house gathering, a suspicious death and Hercule Poirot on hand to investigate.
From 27 to 31 October, Agatha Christie’s The Hollow comes to Richmond Theatre as part of its UK national tour. Set in an elegant country estate, the story brings together a wealthy family, their friends and one very famous Belgian detective. Poirot was expecting a quiet break in the country. Instead, a shot rings out, a body is discovered and the guests suddenly have rather a lot of explaining to do.
Starring Peter Polycarpou (Birds of a Feather, Evita, The Brutalist) as the famously meticulous, moustachioed Poirot, this is not quite your standard whodunnit. Behind the polished manners and country-house hospitality lie old affairs, jealousies, rivalries and some decidedly questionable behaviour. There is a good deal of humour in the way the wealthy guests behave, with their grand houses, peculiar manners and complete inability to say what they really think.
First published as a novel in 1946, The Hollow was adapted for the stage by Christie herself in 1951, with Poirot notably left out of the play. The new version by playwright Tamsin Oglesby draws on both Christie’s original novel and her 1951 stage adaptation, bringing Poirot back into a story. The production is presented by Fiery Angel, an independent theatre company behind the touring productions of Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, and reunites the company with director Lucy Bailey. The cast includes Sarah Moyle as the wonderfully eccentric Lady Lucy Angkatell, alongside Michael Praed, Luke Allen-Gale, Victoria Blunt and Kemi-Bo Jacobs.
