We may have Brexited, but Londoners still harbour an unmistakable thirst for continental-style pavement dining — glasses clinking just inches from passing pedestrians, pasta consumed under a hopeful sky, and the collective gamble that a wool blazer will suffice in 16°C weather.
Now, one of the West End’s most characterful streets, St Martin’s Lane, is making room for that very fantasy. Now pedestrianised daily from 11am to 11pm, St Martin’s Lane will stay traffic-free until 31 October as part of the Mayor’s “Summer Streets” initiative — yes, it’s autumn, and yes, that deadline may have slipped. Perhaps the council’s clocks run on GMT-creative. Or perhaps it’s a cheeky nod to London’s elusive Indian summer — a warm front teased just long enough to justify eating gnocchi under a heat lamp.
Dining with Elbow Room
The plan is simple and surprisingly elegant: close the street to traffic, line it with tables, and let over 30 restaurants and cafés serve what they do best — ideally with a splash of seasonal Negroni and some baked ricotta. It’s the kind of urban improvisation we’ve seen work brilliantly in Paris, Lisbon, and, increasingly, pockets of post-pandemic London.
Participating venues range from neighbourhood staples to quietly posh hotel eateries, all offering exclusive promotions throughout the season:
- Mildred’s: Pre-theatre menu (2 courses for £24 / 3 for £32), and £2 takeaway coffee deals on weekdays.
- Fumo (San Carlo): Lunchtime small plates — 3 for £23.95 — plus wine pairings for those with leisure in mind.
- The Real Greek: 2-for-1 terrace drinks from 2–6pm.
- Notes Coffee and Tossed are also in, offering modest discounts and a seat in the late-summer glow.
- La Roche: Drinks paired with key dishes — paella, moussaka, or a Full English, depending on your persuasion.

More Than a Mood Board

The scheme — backed by Heart of London Business Alliance and Westminster City Council — is part of a wider post-pandemic push to make al fresco dining a permanent fixture in London’s hospitality offering. It’s also a practical lifeline: an attempt to boost footfall, stimulate local spending, and give restaurants the visibility they lost during successive lockdowns.
“St Martin’s Lane is an iconic street in London’s West End, renowned for its rich theatre and hospitality offer,” says Mark Williams, Deputy Chief Executive of HOLBA. “This opportunity to increase al-fresco dining will increase the street’s appeal and enable even more people to enjoy it.”
In other words, it’s a win for everyone — except, perhaps, motorists looking for a shortcut to Charing Cross.
Whether this ends up being a triumph of urban planning or simply an excuse to sip vermouth on a school night will likely depend on the skies. But with the right coat and a little optimism, the scene on St Martin’s Lane may just resemble something out of Rome — albeit with a Pret on one side and a theatre queue on the other.
We didn’t invent al fresco dining — but this autumn, it’s being served in London.
