This European Country Is the Best for Lake Swimming According to New Research
Summer might be winding down, but Europe’s wild swimming season isn’t over — especially if you’re after crystal-clear waters and mountain views.
A new study has ranked the best countries for lake swimming in Europe based on water quality, and one alpine nation came out clearly on top.
Open water swimming is booming in popularity. In the last decade, searches for ‘lake swimming’ have soared by 1320% in the UK alone. With mental and physical benefits like improved cardiovascular fitness, better sleep, and reduced anxiety, it’s no wonder more people are taking the plunge.
Austria took the crown, with over 96% of its monitored bathing lakes rated “excellent” — the highest in Europe. Two-thirds of the country is covered by the Alps, creating pristine reservoirs and some of the clearest lakes you can swim in. Popular spots like Lake Klopein and Attersee boast warm temperatures and incredible underwater visibility, while Hallstatt’s Badeinsel offers charming alpine views and ideal swimming conditions.
In second place is Finland, where 95.2% of bathing lakes meet excellent water quality standards. Known as the land of a thousand lakes, Finland offers warm swimming in spots like Lake Tuusula and the vast Saimaa, with its unique islands and chance to spot rare wildlife.
Germany ranks third with 91.3% of its bathing lakes rated excellent. Known for its popular “Strandbäder” or lidos, Germany offers great amenities alongside wild swimming opportunities — from the warm Griessee to the turquoise waters of Lake Walchensee.
Other countries rounding out the top five include Italy (89%), Switzerland (88.1%), and France (84.5%), all boasting lakes with great water quality and plenty of swimming options.
