The Gilbert Twins turn their real-life therapy into a musical
They built a 3m-strong following by being inseparable. Now the Gilbert Twins have made a musical about finding their own voice.
The Gilbert Twins are bringing their social-media success to the London stage with a new musical comedy based, rather unusually, on their experience of going to couples therapy together.
Under the Influence, written by Carine and Frances Gilbert with composer and musical director Shona Maule, will transfer to King’s Head Theatre from 8 to 26 September, following its Edinburgh Festival Fringe run.
The show centres on identical twins who find themselves in therapy as their intensely close relationship comes under scrutiny. What begins as a counselling session develops into a musical, exploring the complications of sisterhood, life online and the question of where one person ends and the other begins.
That premise has an obvious connection to the twins’ own careers. Carine and Frances are best known online as @thegilberttwins, where they have built an audience of more than three million followers. They trained in musical theatre before turning to comedy content during the pandemic, eventually making hundreds of sketches for their online audience.
Now they’re returning to the stage with an original show rather than simply bringing their existing internet characters into a theatre. The production is directed by Georgie Rankcom, with Maule writing the music and serving as musical director.
The London run follows a sold-out preview in the capital and the show’s Edinburgh performances. At King’s Head, the 60-minute show will play at 9.15pm, with Saturday performances at 8.15pm. Tickets start at £15 and the production is recommended for ages 14 and over.
For the twins, it marks an unusual career loop: after building an enormous audience by performing as a pair online, they are now using theatre to examine what it means to have a voice of their own.
