Her marriage to Nick Cannon is reportedly heading towards divorce.
But at least Mariah Carey can rest assured that she’s been heralded as the most enduring of pop stars since 1960.
TIME has calculated that the 45-year-old R&B diva has had the longest, most consistently successful career of her peers.
The magazine’s colourful infographic outlines every major artist since 1960 to make it to the Billboard Top 10, and appropriate points were assigned based on rank/time on the chart.
Mariah’s best year was 2005 when she released the singles We Belong Together, Don’t Forget About Us, and Shake It Off.
Carey also scored major points for 1995 when she dropped Fantasy and One Sweet Day alongside Boyz II Men.
The five-time Grammy winner had less luck with her 14th studio album – Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse – which has sold a dismal 103,000 copies.
Mariah Carey Goes Into Hiding Over Divorce Shock
21 August 2014
MARIAH CAREY is said to have gone into hiding following her husband Nick Cannon’s announcement of their separation two days ago.
The singer, 44, has been “left stunned and blindsided” by Nick, 33, the father of her three-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan, confirming the weeks of speculation that their six-year marriage is on the rocks.
“Mariah did not expect Nick to reveal that at this time,” a source tells Day & Night. “They both had kept their living situation private, which they agreed was for the best, so she was left stunned and blindsided.
“She’s holed up with friends and family away from the public glare.”
On Thursday the America’s Got Talent show host Nick told Yahoo’s celebrity gossip site The Insider: “There is trouble in paradise. We have been living in separate houses for a few months. My main focus is my kids.”
There have been numerous reports that the rift stemmed from Mariah’s rage over Nick’s crude boasts on a US radio station in March that prior to their marriage he slept with many famous women, including reality TV star Kim Kardashian.
It’s also said there had been blazing rows over Nick’s alleged insecurities about not being considered on a par with his superstar wife.
The pair met while filming the video for Mariah’s single Bye Bye in 2008 and married after a whirlwind romance later that year.
They renewed their vows last year in a lavish ceremony at Disneyland in California.
Mariah’s publicists declined to comment but stated that the star is “focusing on her children and upcoming tour”.
