The National Theatre’s enchanting new production of Ballet Shoes promises to be a highlight of the Christmas season, blending Noel Streatfeild’s timeless tale of three adopted sisters with a meaningful collaboration with Coram, the UK’s longest-running children’s charity. Playing in the Olivier Theatre until 22 February 2025, this heartwarming production is perfect for families, capturing the joy of togetherness, self-discovery, and ambition.

To celebrate Ballet Shoes, the National Theatre and Coram will shine a spotlight on adoption and found families, a theme at the heart of Streatfeild’s cherished story. In honour of Big Adoption Day on 15 January 2025, the partnership will host special matinee and evening performances, inviting adoptive families and supporters to experience the magic of theatre. The event includes a panel discussion hosted by broadcaster James O’Brien, himself adopted, and behind-the-scenes family tours of the National Theatre.

A Story of Dreams and Determination

Adapted by Kendall Feaver and directed by Katy Rudd, Ballet Shoes is set in a crumbling house filled with fossils and dinosaur bones, where the spirited Pauline, Petrova, and Posy pursue their passions under the watchful care of their guardian Sylvia and a cast of colourful lodgers. Together, they navigate a world resistant to women’s ambitions, forging a future that challenges conventions and celebrates resilience. Feaver’s adaptation brings fresh life to this enduring classic, blending humour, emotion, and theatrical wonder.

Executive Director Kate Varah praised the collaboration: “This festive production celebrates adopted families at its core, and we are thrilled to work with Coram to bring Ballet Shoes to a nationwide audience. The National Theatre is committed to creating unforgettable theatrical experiences that resonate with audiences of all ages.”

Dr. Carol Homden CBE, CEO of Coram, echoed the sentiment: “We are delighted to collaborate with the National Theatre. This production offers a special opportunity for adoptive families to feel represented and inspired. We hope it sparks greater awareness of adoption and encourages more families to come forward.”

An Inclusive Theatrical Experience

The National Theatre continues its commitment to accessibility with assisted performances, including captioned, BSL-interpreted, and audio-described shows, as well as a relaxed performance on Big Adoption Day. Discounted tickets for adoptive families, in partnership with the Consortium of Voluntary Adoption Agencies (CVAA), will also ensure more people can enjoy this festive production.

Perfect for ages 7 and up, Ballet Shoes is a heartwarming reminder of the power of family, resilience, and ambition—ideal for creating lasting memories this holiday season. Tickets are available now at nationaltheatre.org.uk.
