Comedian and actor Rik Mayall has died aged 56, his management has said.

He died of a heart attack shortly after returning from a morning run.

Mayall was best-known for appearing in the TV shows The Young Ones and Bottom, both of which he starred alongside Adrian Edmondson.

He previously survived an almost-fatal quad bike accident in 1998 which left him with neurological injuries.

The Harlow-born actor was also a celebrated writer as well, co-scripting ‘The Young Ones’ alongside Ben Elton and Lise Mayer on top of playing desperate wannabe Rik.

Having broken through at the Comedy Store in the Eighties at the same time as fellow ‘Comic Strip Presents…’ alumni Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders, he went on to personify the alternative comedy scene.

Mayall has three children by make-up artist Barbara Robbin, who he married in 1985.
