I have always been mesmerized by the complexity and sheer work that seems to go in the making of cakes. From the hundreds of showbiz events, fashion shows and parties I’ve been to that involved cakes, I’ve always admired the delicate work that goes in them. Even thinking for a mili-second that it would be a shame to eat them, before devouring the carefully crafted ‘lump’ of sugar and flour.

Sophia Talbot, decided to follow her lifelong passion and has become a prolific cake maker in just 18 months. I met the 24 year old from Kilburn, North West London -sister of actor Danny Dyer- at London Fashion Week, were she had a huge display of the most fantastic looking cupcakes and cake ‘art’ I’d seen for a long while.

Having had a variety of jobs including child minding, Sophia has decided to make her hobby her new career. Completely self taught, she began making cakes for friends and family, and through word of mouth she has had so many orders that at times it has been difficult to find space for them prior to delivery.

When Sophia arrived for our shoot, she came through the doors carrying -precariously- a tower of cake boxes. She gingerly put them down, and told me there were more to come. A few minutes later, she appeared with yet another ‘tower’ of boxes. I quickly helped her to set them up, being careful to not ruin them. They looked fantastic! When I asked her who they were for, she replied “Oh, for no one, I made them specially for the shoot. It took me 2 weeks.” I was astonished. I truly admire the work ethic and dedication of this new cake goddess.

Her biggest nightmare is transportation. She tells me “It’s a complete headache making elaborate cakes and then having to drive them around. The can break so easily when driving round corners. Worst of all was a 4-foot tall Rapunzel cake I made for a birthday party. I got it there fine in the end, but very stressful”.

Her company will be launching later this year. In the meantime, for all manner of cakes customized to order, she can be contacted via the Facebook link below.
