Three friends, one boat, and a Thames trip gone hilariously wrong.
Three Men in a Boat comes to the Rose Theatre this autumn, a riotous new comedy by Al Smith adapted from Jerome K. Jerome’s much-loved novel. Directed by Christopher Haydon, following the success of Ava Pickett’s sparkling 21st-century Emma in 2025, the production promises chaos, calamity, and, yes, extremely angry swans. The full cast and creative team will be announced soon, but audiences can already expect a wildly funny journey along the Thames, from leafy Kingston to Oxford’s dreaming spires.
Christopher Haydon, Artistic Director of the Rose Theatre, says: “When I first read Three Men in a Boat, I could not believe how laugh-out-loud funny it still is. The story begins in Kingston, which made it feel like the perfect fit for the Rose. Al Smith brings a brilliant mix of wit and charm to the adaptation, and I cannot wait to share this joyful and hilarious story with our audiences.”
The story follows Jerome, George, and Harris, three lifelong friends whose simple boat trip up the Thames quickly turns into an unpredictable adventure. Intended as a relaxing escape, the journey is anything but calm. Torrential rain, eccentric dogs, hallucinations caused by extremely rancid cheese, and eighteen very angry swans all conspire to create a thoroughly chaotic trip. It is a tale of friendship, mischief, and calamity on the river, brought vividly to life through a combination of Al Smith’s adaptation and the physical comedy expertise of John Nicholson. The production promises rollicking humour, heartfelt moments, and a sense of adventure that will delight both long-time fans of Jerome K. Jerome and newcomers alike.
Christopher Haydon’s direction builds on his acclaimed work at the Rose, including the 21st-century adaptation of Emma and productions such as Never Let Me Go, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, and Leopards. Al Smith, the writer, is known for plays including Harrogate, Rare Earth Mettle, and Diary of a Madman, and has earned recognition from the Royal Court Theatre, Traverse Theatre, and BBC Radio 4. Physical comedy director John Nicholson, creative lead at Peepolykus, brings decades of experience translating eccentric, slapstick humour to the stage, ensuring that the chaos of the Thames is as riotous in performance as it is on the page.
Three Men in a Boat runs at the Rose Theatre, Kingston upon Thames, from Friday 18 September to Saturday 10 October 2026. Tickets are available for Rose Members now, with general sale opening Wednesday 25 February 2026 at midday. Book online at www.rosetheatre.org.
