From 31 July to 15 August, Kiln Theatre’s summer festival brings theatre, music and outdoor art to Kilburn High Road, with community-led events supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund
Kiln Theatre has set out the full programme for this year’s Kilburn High Road Festival, running from 31 July to 15 August. It marks the final stage of a three-year project built with local residents and organisations, with much of the work now moving out of the theatre and onto the High Road itself.
The Kilburn-based Kiln Theatre has long mixed new writing with projects developed in the area. This festival leans into that, drawing directly on material gathered over the past three years, with support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Here is what’s in the programme.

All The Things We Can’t Explain
A new production by Sonia Jalaly opens the festival on Kiln’s main stage. It is performed by 80 members of the theatre’s Intergenerational Company, aged between six and 88, who have been meeting regularly since last year. The material comes from their conversations and workshops, shaped into a play that reflects on Kilburn through memory and shared experience.

The High Road: Unframed
A series of outdoor works runs along Kilburn High Road, developed with Action Space. Six artists have created pieces in response to the area, later adapted into large-scale installations. They sit within the everyday flow of the street rather than being set apart from it.

Capturing Kilburn
Photographer Roy Mehta has made portraits of five local business owners, shown in the windows of their premises. Each image is presented with archival material and personal references, placing individual stories alongside the history of the buildings they occupy.

Passages
Three site-specific pieces are staged across Kilburn, each drawn from stories collected during the project. One follows the High Road’s food culture through an audio-guided walk. Another focuses on a long-time resident, staged inside a café. A third unfolds as a promenade performance, tracing nights out in the area. All 95 collected stories will also be displayed at Kiln during the festival.

Sound of Kilburn
Live music forms part of the programme, with a Kilburn House Band performing outdoors at points along the High Road. The set-up draws on local musical histories and current performers, with dates still to be confirmed.
Dates to be announced
Other elements include installations, exhibitions and events developed with partner organisations across the area. Together, they reflect the work done over the past three years rather than introducing something separate from it.
