The overlooked Pride and Prejudice sister takes centre stage in Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, receiving its UK premiere at Park Theatre after a sell-out Chicago run.

Mary Bennet has spent more than two centuries in the shadow of her sisters.

In Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, she is the serious, bookish middle Bennet, more often remembered for her attempts at moral observation and musical performance than for any great turn in the story. This Christmas, she gets one of her own.

Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon, will receive its UK premiere at Park Theatre from 2 December to 10 January. The play returns to the Bennet family after Elizabeth and Jane have found their romantic futures, putting Mary at the centre of a new story at Pemberley.

The premise asks what might happen if the sister everyone has already dismissed stopped accepting the role assigned to her.

At Christmas, Mary remains stuck with the reputation of being the awkward, overlooked Bennet. Her situation changes when Lord Arthur de Bourgh arrives at Pemberley, opening up the possibility of a life beyond the one her family expects her to lead.

Rather than adapting Austen’s novel, the play uses its characters as the starting point for a new story. Its focus is Mary’s identity, her place within the family and the possibility of choosing a different future.

The production has already had a sell-out run in Chicago and marks its first UK presentation. Park Theatre is producing it with Adam Blanshay Productions, the same team behind last year’s Christmas show, Dracapella.

For Park Theatre, Miss Bennet will be the main-house Christmas production in its Park200 space. Casting and the creative team are yet to be announced.

The theatre has increasingly built a reputation for developing work that can travel beyond its Finsbury Park home. Its productions have included shows that later transferred to the West End, as well as work that has moved to the National Theatre, the RSC and national touring.

Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley runs at Park Theatre from 2 December 2026 to 10 January 2027. Tickets range from £15 to £60.
