A new 28-bay EV charging hub has opened in southeast London, giving drivers heading to or from London City Airport a new place to top up their cars, as well as an option for those setting off on summer journeys from the capital.

The new RAW Charging site at Charlton Riverside is around 4.5 miles from London City Airport and sits close to Sainsbury’s, M&S, Boots, Decathlon and PureGym. Drivers can charge while shopping or using the nearby leisure facilities rather than making a separate stop solely to recharge.

The prices are 60p per kWh for the 22kW fast chargers and 72p per kWh for the 50kW rapid chargers. There is no connection fee, although an overstay charge applies to the 50kW bays after two hours.

The site is open 24 hours a day and drivers do not need to download an app or create an account before charging. Contactless card payments are accepted, alongside roaming RFID cards and apps.

There are 12 bays offering up to 50kW and 16 offering up to 22kW, with all 28 bays available for vehicles to charge at the same time. The 14 chargers can each serve two cars simultaneously. If two cars are using the same 50kW charger, the available power is split between them.

RAW estimates that a 50kW charger can add around 100 miles of range in about an hour, although the actual charging time depends on the vehicle.

That makes the site particularly suited to drivers combining charging with another stop. RAW says the hub is designed around the typical time people spend at the surrounding shops and leisure businesses, rather than simply aiming to offer the fastest possible charging.

For anyone travelling through southeast London this summer, that could make the location useful as a pre-journey top-up or a stop on the way back into the capital. Its proximity to London City Airport also gives EV drivers another option if they are making an airport run.

The company says the chargers have recorded 99% uptime, with the new site forming part of a wider expansion across east and southeast London. RAW says its hubs at Eastern Avenue Retail Park, Gallions Reach Shopping Park, Merrielands Retail Park and Forest Hill now provide more than 65 charging bays between them.

The Charlton Riverside hub is at 7–11 Gallions Road, London SE7 7FA.
