A stylish, razor-sharp stage reimagining of the classic film noir thriller
A major UK and Ireland tour of Double Indemnity, a gripping new stage adaptation of James M. Cain’s landmark crime novel, arrives at Richmond Theatre from Tuesday 3 to Saturday 7 March, as part of a nationwide tour ahead of a West End season.
The production stars Mischa Barton, best known for her screen work in The O.C. and The Sixth Sense, making her UK stage debut as the dangerously seductive Phyllis Nirdlinger. Inspired by Billy Wilder’s celebrated 1944 film, this bold adaptation brings the tension, glamour and moral ambiguity of classic film noir vividly to the stage.
Opening at Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne on 5 February, the production will tour major venues across the UK and Ireland until May. Audiences can find full tour dates, venues and booking information at:

Set in 1930s Los Angeles, against the backdrop of the Great Depression, Double Indemnity follows Walter Huff, an experienced insurance salesman who has built a career exposing fraud. When he meets Phyllis Nirdlinger while discussing her husband’s life insurance policy, he is drawn into a web of desire, greed and calculated violence.
What begins as a meticulously planned murder quickly spirals into paranoia and mistrust. As the pressure mounts and suspicion closes in, the pair discover that even the most perfect crime carries a heavy psychological cost.
Barton leads a strong ensemble cast including Ciarán Owens as Walter Huff and Martin Marquez as the persistent and perceptive insurance investigator Keyes. Gillian Saker plays Nettie, the Waitress and the Usher, while also understudying Phyllis Nirdlinger. Additional roles are performed by Joseph Langdon, Oliver Ryan and Sophia Roberts, supported by an experienced ensemble.
The stage adaptation is written by Tom Holloway and directed by Oscar Toeman, with set and costume design by Ti Green. The creative team also includes lighting designer Josh Gadsby, sound designer and composer Dan Balfour, additional composition by Zak Gavi, and movement director Chi-San Howard, creating a moody, cinematic world that echoes the fatalism and allure of classic noir.
Sleek, tense and emotionally charged, Double Indemnity blends old-Hollywood glamour with the immediacy of live theatre. A compelling night out for fans of crime fiction, psychological drama and stylish adaptations.
