From Kingston to the UK stage, the beloved story of friendship, kindness, and adventure comes alive in a joyous, pop-infused adaptation perfect for kids and families.
If you loved Onjali Q. Raúf’s multi-award-winning novel The Boy at the Back of the Class, 2026 is your year. The Rose Theatre, in partnership with Children’s Theatre Partnership, brings the story back to life in a stage adaptation that’s equal parts heartwarming and hilarious. Previews kick off on 6 February, with the official opening on 6 February in Kingston upon Thames, before the production embarks on a UK-wide tour.
The story follows Ahmet, a nine-year-old new boy in class who has fled a war-torn country. Silent and enigmatic, he never smiles, never speaks, and doesn’t even like lemon sherbets – until his classmates hatch “The Greatest Idea in the World” to reunite him with his family. Told from a child’s perspective, the play balances humour and heart while exploring themes of kindness, friendship, and the refugee experience.
The cast is led by Serkan Avlik as Ahmet, Sasha Desouza-Willock as Alexa, and Abdul-Malik Janneh as Michael, supported by a talented ensemble including Petra Joan-Athene, Max Jordan, and Evie Weldon making her professional debut. Behind the scenes, Monique Touko directs with flair, supported by co-revival director Amy Crighton, set and costume designer Lily Arnold, and a top-tier creative team bringing the story vividly to life.
Critics loved the 2024 production, with WhatsOnStage calling it “dynamic and pop-infused,” The Stage praising it as a “joyous adaptation,” and the Daily Mail highlighting it as “a clear, compassionate children’s play for today.” It’s ideal for children aged 7+, though the warmth, humour, and storytelling make it perfect for the whole family.
After Kingston, the UK tour takes in Coventry, Southampton, Edinburgh, Eastbourne, Bristol, London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, Salford, Truro, Blackpool, Cardiff, and Bradford, running through May 2026. Each stop promises the same laughter, tears, and moments of wonder that make this adaptation truly special.
The Rose Theatre is proud to partner with Refugee Action Kingston, underscoring the production’s commitment to community and social awareness. For families seeking theatre that’s meaningful, fun, and beautifully staged, The Boy at the Back of the Class is a must-see.
