If you’re visiting Málaga, don’t miss this season’s major exhibition connecting Picasso, Barceló, and Andalucia’s ceramic heritage.

Reflections: Picasso x Barceló is open at the Museo de Almería until 15 March 2026, before touring to the Museo de Cádiz from 25 March – 28 June. The exhibition brings together over 100 ceramic works by Pablo Picasso and Miquel Barceló alongside archaeological masterpieces, exploring clay as a medium of memory and experimentation across centuries.

For Picasso, ceramics became an essential laboratory of ideas after World War II. In Vallauris he transformed plates, jugs, and vessels into human bodies, mythological beings, and everyday scenes, connecting with Andalucian and Mediterranean ceramic traditions. Barceló came to ceramics in the 1990s while in Mali, learning ancestral techniques from the Dogon community.

The Museo de Almería houses one of Spain’s most important ceramic collections, spanning more than 5,000 years from Neolithic vessels to modern works. The Museo de Cádiz adds archaeology, fine arts, and ethnography, from Phoenician sarcophagi to Baroque paintings by Zurbarán and Murillo, giving a full picture of Andalucia’s cultural evolution.

Miquel Barceló, Artist, said:

“Ceramics may seem fragile, but they have persisted through the centuries, often remaining in better condition than paintings and frescoes. Their fragility is their strength. No one will melt down Greek vases to make cannons, we can break them with a hammer, but we can also glue them back together again.”

Curated by López-Remiro, Tania Fábrega (Museo de Almería) and Laura Esparragosa (Museo de Cádiz), and sponsored by Fundación Unicaja, Reflections: Picasso x Barceló is a rare opportunity to see centuries of craft, creativity, and Mediterranean heritage side by side.

Exhibition Dates: 16 December 2025 – 15 March 2026
