Relational Gestures presents an exploration of performance and research artifacts by the pioneering artist and researcher, Sougwen Chung, who has been at the forefront of Human-Machine collaboration for the past decade.
Throughout their journey, Chung has delved into the evolution of the human hand, employing a diverse array of tools such as robotics, AI systems, brainwave sensors, and augmented reality.
This innovative blend of art and engineering contemplates the creation of a machine ‘other’, as well as our own inherent capacity for empathy and anthropomorphism.
Within each step of the creative process, Chung’s work offers a profound examination of the exquisite intricacies and vulnerabilities found within both human and machine systems, resisting simplistic narratives of technological peril or promise. In each artifact, painted brushstrokes interleave time and spectrums of agency on the same plane. In both their research and its tangible outcomes, Chung’s interventions envision new forms of closeness in a world that often feels increasingly estranged. Chung’s multifaceted body of work deftly weaves together biological and mechanical forms, firmly anchored in the potential of embodied artistic expression, all while embracing a continual state of transformation.”
Sougwen Chung’s work with AI represents a significant divergence from the dominant AI paradigm, drawing in diverse audiences from art lovers and AI enthusiasts to art+tech watchers and experts in robotics and machine learning. Most notable among their growing range of artworks are their artworks and performances created in collaboration with AI-powered robotic arm, D.O.U.G. (Drawing Operations Unit Generation), which have won critical acclaim around the world.
The show runs at the HOFA Gallery until 25th of October 2023 and you can browse all exhibited works here: https://thehouseoffineart.com/artists/269-sougwen-chung/works/ .
