A new theatre experience for babies aged 0–2 arrives in London, combining aerial performance, music and post-show play designed to support early development and parent–child connection.

A new kind of theatre show is arriving in London this summer, aimed not at families in general but specifically at babies.

Take Flight, created by Rebel Sparks and directed by Ria Ashcroft, is a multi-sensory aerial production designed for children aged 0–2 and their adults. The show uses movement, colour and sound rather than dialogue, following a simple story of a mother bird and baby bird exploring the world.

Two performers move through the space using aerial silks, accompanied by a gentle musical score. The emphasis is on pace and atmosphere, with the structure shaped around how very young audiences engage with sound and movement.

The production was developed in collaboration with developmental psychologist Dr Valentina Sclafani (University of Lincoln), with a focus on supporting early neurological and motor development while encouraging interaction between babies and their caregivers.

Performances are relaxed. Babies are free to move, make noise and be cared for throughout. After the show, audiences are invited to stay for a play session, with access to the set and props, including the aerial silks.

Director Ria Ashcroft said, “The whole show has been designed with babies at the heart of it, from the first seeds of the idea to co creating with babies in the rehearsal room. As a mother myself I wanted to create a show that feels like soft warm hug, a sanctuary for the babies and grownups, to create a moment of calm, comedy, silliness and bonding. The show reflects and captures the chaotic mayhem of the madness and beauty of this time.”

London dates include:

  • 5–6 June, Half Moon Theatre
  • 13 June, Grand Junction
  • 1–5 July, Polka Theatre

Running at around 60 minutes including the stay-and-play session, Take Flight sits between theatre and sensory play, offering an alternative to more traditional early years activities.

The show is currently touring nationally from May to July 2026.
