Sham Marriages Rising at ‘Alarming Rate’

SHAM marriages are rising at an “alarming rate” and pose a threat to the UK’s immigration control, MPs have warned.

The Home Office is failing to do enough to stem the tide of fake husbands and brides earning the right to remain in the country, the Home Affairs Committee said.

There are an estimated 10,000 fake weddings in the UK every year and officials have voiced concerns that growing numbers of EU nationals with a right to live in Britain are being used to earn passports for people from outside the continent.

In a report published today, committee chairman Keith Vaz said: “One sham marriage can provide UK residence rights to an entire extended family who would otherwise have no right to be here.”
