The highly anticipated sci-fi thriller The Creator has made an impressive debut at the UK box office. According to figures released today, the film took £2.26 million in its opening week, screening at 651 sites across the country. This puts The Creator at number one in the UK box office chart for the weekend of September the 29th and October the 1st.

Given the film’s relatively modest budget of $80 million, this is a very strong start. The Creator beat out stiff competition from holdovers like Saw X and Expendables to claim the top spot. Ability to capture the topic of the Zeitgeist and positive word of mouth seem to be driving audiences to see the thought-provoking film. With its intriguing premise exploring the ethics of artificial intelligence, The Creator is clearly resonating with UK moviegoers. Its first week numbers indicate The Creator may have box office legs if it continues generating buzz. The film’s examination of technology’s risks and rewards appears to be hitting a nerve.

The Creator’s arrival on the scene makes it one of the most fascinating and talked about new releases in recent weeks. The director and writer of the film Gareth Edwards has attended London Premiere at the Science Museum on the 26th of October where he admired that the script was a love letter to every film he grew up watching “I put them all in a pot and tried to stir them hard enough to have something different come up. It’s kind of a fairy tale. I was trying to do a not to ET where I went in hoping to see al lot of aliens and I got pulled into this very emotional journey with these two characters.”

Whatever Gareth did seem to be working and we will be following the journey in the UK box office.
