Celebrating Black dandyism and style through Tyler Mitchell’s evocative portraits, on view at Gagosian’s Burlington Arcade this autumn.

From September 15, Gagosian’s London gallery at the historic Burlington Arcade will unveil a compelling new presentation of photographs by Tyler Mitchell. This marks the first public exhibition of his “Portrait of the Modern Dandy” series, created for Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, the spring 2025 Costume Institute exhibition at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The installation runs until October 3 and coincides with the launch of Mitchell’s debut monograph, Wish This Was Real, published by Aperture. A book signing event with the artist will take place on September 20.

Mitchell’s work explores the rich history and cultural significance of Black style from the eighteenth century to the present day. His portraits, featuring models clad in garments from the Superfine exhibition alongside figures in vintage and personal attire, celebrate how Black individuals have reimagined classical European fashion into a vibrant, distinctive expression of identity and resistance.

Described by the artist as “a love letter to modern Black dandyism,” the photographs engage with the traditions of historical studio and portrait photography, emphasizing dress as a powerful symbol of agency, elegance, and kinship.
