Jamie Wei Huang is the designer and founder of contemporary womenswear label Jamie Wei Huang. Huang founded the label in 2013 after graduating from Fashion Design Womenswear at Central Saint Martin’s College in London, where she began to develop her signature style of strong elongated silhouettes, constructed with careful juxtaposition of fabrics to cater to the contemporary individuals, a signature style, that the young designer still stays true to.

Jamie Wei Huang SS17 “The Kool Kids”

“The Kool Kids” is the name of Jamie Wei Huang’s latest collection. During London Fashion Week SS17, the collection was presented for the fashion professionals in the Designer Showrooms. After Fashion Week, the collection became available for the public, where it was a part of the London Fashion Weekend. Finally, the collection was exhibited during Paris Fashion Week at The-Althepbet Showroom in Paris.

The SS17 collection by Jamie Wei Huang is all about the subconscious rebelliousness that can be found deep inside all the individuals, a feeling which helps form the many sub-cultures that our society consists of. It is the battle between “conforming a stereotype and being recognized” as the press release states. It is “wanting to wear a uniform but then distorting it”.

Essential components of Huang’s label are simplistic with clean refined outlines, leather details and strong patterns cutting for modern character stories.

The components reveal themselves in “The Kool Kids” collection, and together with details such as embroidering the garment with the actual codes and numbers of the pieces and using the industry professional notes from pattern cutting, sampling and making, the collection reveals the reality of the pre-existing role of each specific piece.

Ikon London Magazine visited the Designer Showrooms in London, to take a look at the Jamie Wei Huang SS17 collection. The collection instantly made us dream about warmer days with wide, striped pants, white tops, sand between our toes and bright blues. It only took us a few moments to fall in love with the collection, that has a limited colour palette, mostly consisting of white, black, blue, red and some shades of grey. The cuts are clean and modern, and if it wasn’t for the inevitable dynamic details throughout the entire collection, Jamie Wei Huang could very well be mistaken for a Scandinavian minimalist, but Jamie Wei Huang is a lot more than that…

Does the collection intrigue your inner rebel as much as it intrigued ours? Check out Jamie Wei Huang’s web shop at; https://jamieweihuang.mysupadupa.com/. You can also find pieces from the Jamie Wei Huang label in different department stores around the world such as David Jones, Isetan Japan or IT Hong Kong.
