Tickets go on sale this month for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s first musical, bringing William Kamkwamba’s story of ingenuity and resilience to Soho Place in April 2026.
The production follows the Malawian teenager who, during a period of severe drought, built a windmill from scrap materials to bring electricity to his village.
Alistair Nwachukwu will play the title role, joined by Madeleine Appiah, Tsemaye Bob-Egbe, Owen Chaponda and a supporting ensemble. Chiwetel Ejiofor, who wrote, directed and starred in the 2019 film adaptation, joins the West End production as creative associate and executive producer.
The musical features a book and lyrics by Richy Hughes, with music and lyrics by Tim Sutton, and is directed by Lynette Linton, former artistic director of the Bush Theatre. The creative team includes set and costume designer Frankie Bradshaw, choreographer Shelley Maxwell, and video designer Gino Ricardo Green, among others.
The West End run begins at Soho Place on 25 April, with press night on 5 May, and concludes on 18 July 2026. Tickets can be booked from 26 November via boyharnessedwindmusical.com.
Kamkwamba’s story has already reached audiences through his memoir and the 2019 film, but the stage adaptation allows the events of his life to be experienced in real time, in a shared, communal setting. The musical depicts his resourcefulness and determination, showing the challenges he faced and the small victories that led to a larger transformation in his community.
The production is also a notable moment for the Royal Shakespeare Company. While the company is best known for its classical theatre, this marks its first West End musical and reflects a willingness to explore contemporary stories with global significance.
