Kristin Scott Thomas will play the tragic, magnetic Lyubov Ranevskaya in Conor McPherson’s bold new adaptation. Directed by Ian Rickson, the West End production opens at the Harold Pinter Theatre this October.
Scott Thomas, who won an Olivier for Ian Rickson’s production of The Seagull, reunites with the director for what she describes as a “return home” to Chekhov. In McPherson’s hands, The Cherry Orchard promises to be neither dusty period drama nor academic exercise, but a vibrant, urgent exploration of memory, loss, and the pull of the past.
At the centre of it all is Ranevskaya, the once-wealthy landowner returning to her family estate after years abroad. Her beloved cherry orchard, the symbol of a world slipping away, faces sale and destruction. With old loyalties dissolving and new ambitions rising, Ranevskaya becomes both a witness to and participant in a world in flux, torn between nostalgia and necessity.
“This play lives in the space between laughter and heartbreak,” Scott Thomas says. “Conor’s adaptation brings an energy and immediacy that makes Chekhov feel startlingly contemporary. I can’t wait to explore the depths of Ranevskaya’s heart with Ian Rickson.”

The production’s pedigree reads like a who’s who of modern theatre: Ian Rickson, known for Jerusalem and Uncle Vanya, directs; Conor McPherson, celebrated for The Weir and Girl from the North Country, has crafted the adaptation; Chloe Lamford’s set design, Bruno Poet’s lighting, and Shelley Maxwell’s movement direction promise a visual and physical world that complements Chekhov’s poetic melancholy.
Together, the team aims to illuminate Ranevskaya’s delicate but stubborn humanity: a woman caught between personal longing and societal change, a figure both fragile and formidable.
The Cherry Orchard runs from 3 October 2026 – 9 January 2027, with press night on 13 October. Performance times are Monday–Saturday at 7.30pm, with Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm. Selected BSL, captioned, and audio-described performances are available.
