Unfortunately: You Are What You Earn — New Show Comes to Shoreditch Town Hall
Josie Dale-Jones and Ragevan Vasan’s new show looks at what money — or the lack of it — does to our relationships, ambitions and sense of self.
Two-time Scotsman Fringe First Award-winning theatre company ThisEgg returns to Shoreditch Town Hall with unfortunately, a new production looking at money, debt and the ways our finances shape how we see ourselves and each other.
Created by Josie Dale-Jones and Ragevan Vasan, the production combines theatre with catwalk-inspired visuals, humour and a deliberately non-linear structure. Rather than offering a straightforward argument about money, unfortunately looks at the connections between money, identity, relationships, success and self-worth.
The production continues ThisEgg’s work in socially engaged theatre and is part of Shoreditch Town Hall’s 160th anniversary programme, with the company an Associate Company at the venue for 2026.
The show is also accompanied by a programme of free workshops with Debt Justice, exploring debt, power and inequality. The sessions take the themes of the production beyond the theatre and look at the wider systems that shape people’s financial lives.
In keeping with the show’s subject, ticket prices are structured around different levels of disposable income. Audiences can choose a £200 Philanthropist ticket or a £50 Disposable Income ticket, each of which releases subsidised £10 tickets for other bookers. Standard £20 tickets are also available.
Unfortunately runs at Shoreditch Town Hall from 22–26 September 2026. The production runs for 90 minutes without an interval and is suitable for ages 16+.
