Natasha Gordon’s Nine Night returns to the Kiln with a new cast and extended run
A new production of Natasha Gordon’s acclaimed family drama opens at the Kiln Theatre in November, with the run now extended to 2 January 2027.
Natasha Gordon’s Nine Night is returning to the Kiln Theatre this autumn, with a new cast and a run that has now been extended into January 2027.
First staged at the National Theatre in 2018, Gordon’s play centres on a Jamaican family coming together after the death of Gloria. They are observing Nine Night, a traditional Jamaican wake held over nine nights, and the extended gathering gives old grievances, family secrets and tensions plenty of time to surface.
The new production is directed by Amit Sharma, Artistic Director and CEO of the Kiln, and brings together Sonya Cassidy as Sophie, Estella Daniels as Trudy, Llewella Gideon as Auntie Maggie, Ava Hinds-Jones as Anita, Gary McDonald as Uncle Vincent, Dani Moseley as Lorraine and Javone Prince as Robert.
The setting is familiar to anyone who has experienced a family gathering that lasts longer than planned: people arrive with food, drink and opinions, and grief does not necessarily make everyone behave better. Gordon uses the wake to move between comedy and the more complicated business of family, where affection, resentment and long-held secrets can sit alongside each other.
The play was Gordon’s debut and went on to win her the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Most Promising Playwright and the Critics’ Circle Award. It was also nominated for an Olivier Award for Best Comedy. The play has since been revived in the UK and received its US premiere in Washington, DC.
The new cast brings together performers with substantial theatre and screen credits. Gideon has appeared in Mr Loverman, Small Axe and Rye Lane, while Prince’s theatre work includes productions with the RSC, National Theatre, Royal Court and Young Vic. Moseley has appeared in Dreaming Whilst Black and the Broadway transfer of Jaja’s African Hair Braiding. Cassidy is known for television roles in Reacher and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
For Sharma, directing Nine Night also means taking on a play with a particular connection to the Kiln, formerly the Tricycle Theatre. The theatre has a long history of presenting work rooted in the communities around Kilburn, making Gordon’s story a natural fit for its current programme.
The production runs from 12 November 2026 to 2 January 2027, with audio-described, captioned, relaxed and BSL performances scheduled during the run.
