Featuring Olly Alexander, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Hugh Dennis, Shobna Gulati, and Stephen Fry
Production images have been unveiled for the much-anticipated West End transfer of the National Theatre’s acclaimed production of The Importance of Being Earnest. This vibrant, contemporary reboot of Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy is now playing at the Noël Coward Theatre, running until 10 January 2026 in a co-production with Sonia Friedman Productions.
Directed by award-winning theatre visionary Max Webster, this bold and brash interpretation has already won widespread praise, with The Times describing it as a “bold and brash Wilde reboot” (★★★★) and the Daily Mail calling it a “sparkling new production” (★★★★★). Webster’s version injects fresh energy and flamboyance into Wilde’s timeless satire on Victorian society and the absurdities of identity and love.
The star-studded cast features Olly Alexander as Algernon Moncrieff and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Jack Worthing, the two gentlemen who adopt double lives in a comedic tangle of mistaken identities. Joining them are Hugh Dennis as the charming Rev. Canon Chasuble and Shobna Gulati as the ever-pragmatic Miss Prism. Kitty Hawthorne and Jessica Whitehurst play the young romantic leads, Gwendolen Fairfax and Cecily Cardew respectively, while Hayley Carmichael takes on the dual roles of Merriman and Lane. The legendary Stephen Fry shines as the formidable Lady Bracknell, delivering Wilde’s wit with razor-sharp timing. Ensemble and understudy members Jasmine Kerr, Sam Liu, Gillian McCafferty, Elliot Pritchard, and Liv Spencer round out the dynamic cast.

This dazzling production originally premiered at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton Theatre from November 2024 to January 2025. Following a sold-out run and a worldwide release via National Theatre Live—watched by over 165,000 people in the UK alone—the production’s West End transfer marks the next exciting chapter for this joyful reinvention of Wilde’s work.
Max Webster, known for his spectacular and innovative direction across theatre, opera, and live music, brings a fresh vision to Wilde’s celebrated play. His credits include acclaimed productions such as Macbeth at the Donmar Warehouse and Life of Pi on Broadway. Supported by an expert creative team — including set and costume designer Rae Smith, lighting designer Jon Clark, and sound designer Nicola T. Chang — the production is a feast for the senses, combining stunning visuals with vibrant performances.
This National Theatre production is presented in partnership with Sonia Friedman Productions, one of the world’s leading theatre producers, renowned for hit shows like Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and The Book of Mormon. Their collaboration ensures a world-class experience for West End audiences, continuing to bring the best of British theatre to the stage.
