Rehearsal photos have been released for Ukraine Unbroken, the new cycle of five plays depicting twelve years of modern Ukrainian history, running at London’s Arcola Theatre from 27 February to 28 March 2026.
Ukraine Unbroken is conceived and directed by Nicolas Kent, the producer and director behind Olivier Award-nominated productions including The Great Game – Afghanistan. The production presents a cycle of five short plays by British and Ukrainian writers: David Edgar, David Greig, Jonathan Myerson, Cat Goscovitch, and Natalka Vorozhbit, translated by Sasha Dugdale. It charts the course of Ukraine’s modern history from the Maidan protests of 2014 to Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022 and its aftermath, portraying the impact of political upheaval and war on individuals and families.

The production features live Ukrainian music performed by Mariia Petrovska on the bandura, weaving traditional and contemporary sounds through the performance. The ensemble cast — Daniel Betts, Ian Bonar, Sally Giles, David Michaels, Clara Read, and Jade Williams — take on multiple roles across the five plays, reflecting the varied experiences of people living through conflict.

Creative and production teams include Michael Taylor (set and costume design), Matthew Eagland (lighting), Joe Dines (sound and video), Victoria Gartner (associate director), and a team of stage managers, assistant directors, and casting professionals. Costumes are supervised by Alexa Moore, and John Farndon has provided story support for the musical elements.

Ukraine Unbroken aims to combine theatrical storytelling with real-world context, incorporating headlines, testimonies, and voices from the front line alongside the live performances. The cycle runs for approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes, including an interval, with performances scheduled Monday–Saturday at 7.30pm and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm. A captioned performance will take place on Wednesday 11 March. Tickets start at £12, and the production is recommended for audiences aged 13 and above.
