The 72 Cannes Film Festival’s flashiest – and the most talked-about – moment yet is by far the Rocketman. That is the photo call, the premiere and, of course, the after party on the Carlton Beach.

The Rocketman is the Elton John’s biopic, produced by the Rocketman Entertainment starring Taron Egerton as the musician Elton. Co-produced by John and Furnish, Rocketman traces John’s life and career, from his early breakthrough to his difficulties with substance abuse and his own sexual orientation. The film also explores the musician’s creative partnership with songwriter Bernie Taupin, who was in attendance at the festival.

The official photocall took place early in the day with the main cast and director in attendance. Sir Elton John opted in for a baby-blue suit and topped the look with flashy same-coloured diamante sunglasses and white Gucci trainers with a diamante chunky sole. He also wore a long earring in his right ear in a shape of a cross that was so heavy as to pull his ear lobe right down. Speak of the flashy appearance!

Taron Egerton opted in for a colourful suit with light-blue palm trees on a brown paisley suit and yellow shades. He also wore blue Oxford boots and lilac-blue T-shirt.

To the vocal approval of the press, the duo were in good spirits as they were posing for photos and waving to photographers. Sir Elton John was seen limping following his knee surgery last year. At the end of the photocall, he re-joined with his husband David Furnish as they walked away after the press call. The world premiere debuted later in the evening.

Ahead of its premiere, there was speculation that some of Rocketman’s same-sex content would be censored in order to achieve a US PG-13 rating (equivalent to a 12A rating in the UK), with the Daily Mail reporting that Fletcher had been pressured by producer Paramount to cut 40 seconds of a scene in which Egerton and Madden are seen partially naked. However, the film has since been given a more mature R rating, and Fletcher has promised that it will be a “no-holds barred” account of the singer’s life.

For the star-studded red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival held at Palais des Festivals, however, the couple opted for traditional black tux suits – much to the disapproval of photographers at the premiere. Elton John has aptly pinned a sequin rocket pin to his lapel. Taron Egerton wore a grey velvet tux. “We were hoping that Sir Elton John would wear something bright and memorable during the premiere like he did for the photocall,” commented one photographer to Ikon London Magazine. “But alas, they all wore boring black suits.”

Later in the night, at the official after-party, the guests were treated to an unannounced intimate concert by Elton John and Taron Egerton. The legend of the music world sure knows how to leave an unforgettable impression and set the headlines agenda.

Rocketman is released in UK cinemas on 22 May, with a US release following on 31 May.
