The Magnum party is one of the landmark parties taking place each year during the Cannes Film Festival. With a usually over-subscribed guest list and a who’s who of the fashion world as the main collaborators (Cara Delevingne, Bella Hadid, etc), the Magnum bash is seemingly always ‘On’ and ‘Ready to Play’.

This year, Magnum announced a collaboration with Iris Apfel – the Canadian interior designer and fashion icon. The Magnum beach bar at the 64 la Croisette was styled with Iris Apfel’s quotes like ‘You can’t be interesting unless you are interested’ and the ice creams with the staple thick-framed Iris glasses set the tone for the night.

But to the disappointment of guests, the 97-year old fashion inspiration for the 2019 collaboration was not able to attend in person. Not quite a surprise – she’s 97! Instead, Rita Ora -she sings apparently- was chosen to stand in for her. The singer attended the photocall earlier in the day to make her own ice cream and perform a few songs for the press. She, of course, returned to the Magnum beach late in the evening, sporting the same white corset dress on both occasions.

It was a very busy night in Cannes as the event competed for celebrities and VIPs against the uber popular Rocketman after party. As if deliberately wanting to compete with Rocketman, Magnum beach opened its doors at half past nine in the evening – unlike 6 pm the previous years – so it coincided with the impromptu Elton John’s concert two marquees down.

Cold Perrier Jouet champagne and spirits flowed at the bar all night. However, the event didn’t attract many celebrities and the myriad of mainstream media journalists in attendance tasked with scooping the ‘juicy stories’ at the Cannes Film Festival retired early to other events.
